EA has revealed the details of another aspect of Season Showdown: Sportsmanship. Check our blog for the lowdown on everything involved with Sportsmanship.

Season Showdown Credits

EA has released the third aspect of NCAA 10’s new Season Showdown feature (skill and strategy being the other two): Sportsmanship.

For those who don’t already know, Season Showdown is an online feature that tracks how well each school’s fans perform using a variety of categories. Each week there will be match-ups based on who each team plays in real life. For example, in Season Showdown Georgia fans will be squaring off against Oklahoma State fans on NCAA 10 while the real Bulldogs and Cowboys fight it out on the field.

The Sportsmanship feature’s main purpose is to discourage players from “cheesing”, while rewarding the players who play games straight up and realistically. There are several different ways to both gain and lose Sportsmanship points throughout the game:

Ways to Gain Credits:

Punt on 4th down – Easy; if the situation calls for you to punt, you punt.

QB Kneel – If you have a lead late in the game and can just knee out the clock, you will now be rewarded when you do so.

Chewing the Clock – A new addition to the game this year is the ability to “chew” the clock. When this feature is activated, the game automatically fast forwards the game and play clocks so that there is 12 seconds left when you break the huddle. This way you still have time to come to the line and call an audible if you need to, but you don’t have to sit and wait for the play clock to wind all the way down.

Concede Defeat – If you are trailing late in the game, or just straight getting throttled, offer to concede defeat and end the game. You can gain credits for waiving the white flag, and your opponent can also gain credits by accepting and showing some mercy.

Ways to Lose Credits:

Go for it on 4th down – Obviously if you are losing late in the game, or are encountered with a 4th and 1 in borderline field goal range, you will not be deducted for going for it. However, if you are the type of player who goes for it on nearly every 4th down, no matter distance and score, you’ll find yourself getting deducted for poor sportsmanship.

2 Point Conversions – Again, there are times in a game when going for 2 is not only acceptable, it’s necessary. This feature is in place for the times when teams go for 2 point conversions when it is unnecessary. If you are up 20-0 and go for 2 instead of kicking the extra point, you will lose Sportsmanship credits.

Onside kicks – Though they are rarely successful, we still see people who kick onside kicks all the time, despite having the lead. Now you will lose Sportsmanship credits if you feel the need to kick an unnecessary onside kick while leading.

Calling a timeout to pad stats – We’ve all been in the situation where we are losing and just want to get the game over, then our opponent calls a timeout with 1 second left just to run one more play or kick one more field goal. Now, if you call that late timeout with a lead just to pad some stats, you’ll be deducted Sportsmanship credits.

Running up the score – If you have a big lead late in the 4th quarter, but are still throwing the ball all over the yard, expect to lose some credits. Do the respectable thing and run the ball to keep the clock winding and finish the game off to avoid the credit deduction. Now obviously, if it’s a key third down you need to convert to keep the drive alive, or the game is close enough you still need to score, there will be no credit deduction.

That’s all for now, but EA has announced that all of the situations and scores for which you can gain/lose credits are tunable on the fly. So if they need to make adjustments after the game comes out they can do so quickly and without the need of a patch.

Any Sportsmanship credits that you gain or lose throughout the course of games will not only be applied to whichever school you represent, but also your own Season Showdown ID score. This makes it easy to check out an opponent’s ID card and know exactly how you can expect them to play.

I think the addition of the Sportsmanship portion of Season Showdown will be very effective for online players. It probably won’t have a big impact on those players who just don’t care about playing the game the right way, but for everyone else this is a cool new feature. Not only does it entice you to play realistically by rewarding you with credits, but it tracks how each user plays so you can identify right away if you want to enter into a game with someone by checking out their Sportsmanship credits.

The Big 10 has several football teams who may be able to challenge for the conference title in ‘09, and this is how it actually played out….

Champion – The Ohio State Buckeyes (7-1): Tryrell Pryor consistently gives Big 10 defenses fits. Ohio State’s defense steadily improves throughout the season. The Buckeyes enter their usual BCS bowl season on somewhat of a sour note however. Michigan hands Ohio State their first conference loss in the season finale, costing them the their chance at yet another BCS Championship game appearance.

T-2. Iowa (6-2): The Hawkeyes are able to put together another solid season under Kirk Ferentz. Iowa’s offense explodes out of the gates, and the Hawkeyes get through non-conference play without a scratch. Impressive wins @Penn St and @Wisconsin push an undefeated Iowa into the top 10 rankings by mid-October. But a loss @Michigan St and @Ohio St kill Iowa’s hopes for a BCS bowl birth.

T-2. Penn St (6-2): Penn St suffers an early loss to Iowa, but then really takes the meat of their Big 10 schedule by storm. The ground game, led by Evan Royster, proves to be even better than expected, and the young secondary really makes strides in the second half of the season. The Nittany Lions suffer a close loss to Ohio State in November, but they finish the season strong with an impressive victory over Michigan St.

T-2. Michigan St (6-2): The bad memories of John L. Smith are almost gone. The Spartans end up being one of the bigger surprises of the Big Ten in ‘09. The loss @Minnesota left many scratching their heads, but Mark Dantonio appears to have the Spartans heading in the right direction. The defense continued to impress.

5. Michigan (5-3): Rich Rodriguez had a bit of a slow start, but with the offense finally hitting on all cylinders the Wolverines finished the season with a bang. Michigan wins their final four games capped off with an upset over Ohio State.

6. Illinois (4-4): Juice Williams continues to battle with inconsistency as Illinois churns out another mediocre season compared to the inflated expectations of Illini fans. The defense played great at times, but untimely turnovers and penalties cost Ron Zook’s squad several close games.

T-7. Wisconsin (3-5): It wasn’t a secret that John Clay was supposed to be one of the best backs in the Big 10 entering the 2009 season, and he was proved to be just that leading the Big 10 in rushing yards and yards per carry. But the Badgers just couldn’t find a quarterback they could hang their hat on, and the defense just didn’t do enough to win what turned out to be numerous single digit losses.

T-7. Northwestern (3-5): The Wildcats entered the ‘09 season with high hopes, especially with both Michigan and Ohio St not on the schedule. The defense turns out to be one of the best in the Big 10, but the offense has trouble finding replacements for Tyrell Sutton and 2008’s veteran receiving corps.

9. Minnesota (2-6): Things weren’t expected to come easy in ‘09, but it didn’t end up panning out how Tim Brewster anticipated. The Gophers were the causalities of a brutal road slate with games @Penn St, @Ohio St, and @Iowa.

T-11. Indiana (1-7): It wasn’t too long ago that many coaches around the Big 10 were really worried about what might become of Indiana. Indiana had a great coach in Terry Hoepner, and it appeared that the program was definitely ready to start competing with the top half of the Big 10 year in and year out. But Indiana hasn’t really been able to recover after Hoepner’s unfortunate passing.

T-11. Purdue (1-7): Joe Tiller didn’t exactly leave Purdue with a bare cupboard, but the talent in West Lafayette isn’t anything to write home about. Purdue struggles in Danny Hopes first year at the helm.

EA has launched the TeamBuilder website for NCAA 10. TeamBuilder is a web-based, revamped version of EA’s former create-a-team mode.

Teambuilder

EA has launched the TeamBuilder website for NCAA 10. TeamBuilder is a web-based, revamped version of EA’s former create-a-team mode. You begin by creating a team name and location, as well as the stadium name and school prestige. From there you can select your school’s colors and logo. With the web-based TeamBuilder, you can upload an image to use as your school’s logo, or use an existing logo, which includes all FBS and FCS school’s logos as well as an expanded amount of generic ones.

The next step is to select an existing stadium to use as the blueprint for your own. After selecting a stadium, you can edit all the small details of the field, including turf type, endzone lettering and colors, midfield logos, and secondary logos.

Once the stadium is in place, it’s time to create the uniforms for your school. This section features similar options from years’ past, but is much more detailed and is presented in a more user-friendly way. There are dozens and dozens of combinations for stripes and logos on the helmets, as well as logo placement on the jersey, etc. After editing your uniforms you can select any existing mascot to use to represent your school, or choose to go without one.

Everything up to this point will feel pretty familiar to anyone who has used the create-a-school features of the older games, but this is where it gets interesting. You can now edit all of the information about your team that affects recruiting and other areas of the game. This includes academic prestige, campus lifestyle, facilities, fan base, coach prestige, pro potential, program stability and more. From that point you can edit every feature of your team’s entire roster! You start by selecting a base roster to work with, which includes many default rosters, and now every FBS team’s real roster! So if you want to create a replica of the Ohio State Buckeyes, load up their roster and you are set. However, if you are the type that wants to create an entire roster of their own players, you can pick any base roster and edit every small detail you wish; height, weight, appearance, name, position, year, number, and all the player’s skills (more on the new position-specific skills to come later).

Once your team is created, you can save it and it will be ready to use in your offline dynasty or online play, and can even be made available to share with others via the web.

I think this feature is going to be extremely popular. The fact that EA left create-a-school out of the ’09 version upset many fans, but they have brought it back and it’s better than ever. The ability to easily edit your entire school, ratings and all, is perfect for junkies like me who want to control every aspect of their game. The web-based version makes creating a team easier than ever, and there is no limit on the number of teams you can create. Want to make a copy of your favorite real-world team? Now you can. Always wanted to re-create the team from your favorite football movie? Now it’s easier than ever before.

Visit the site here to start creating and sharing your teams today and let us know what you think!
