Another entry in GameRosters.com's Top 5's: the top 5 sleeper teams of the 2009 college football season.

5. Syracuse
We may be going out on a big limb with this one, but we are throwing the Orange into the mix. Coach Doug Marrone, a former player, has made an effort to get ‘Cuse more in touch with its past, when they were a nationally respected program. Syracuse does lose some key pieces from last year, but they also return some guys who can make big impacts. RB Delone Carter might be better than the departed Curtis Brinkley, and WR Mike Williams is the best receiver the Orange has seen in years. It looks like the nod at QB will go to Ryan Nassib, who has never started a college game but has been phenomenal this off-season. With all those pieces and a decent offensive line, Syracuse will have a pretty good offense this fall, and if the defense can improve even a little bit, they could end up in the neighborhood of 5 wins. For this team, that would be a great season.

4. Iowa

They may not be flying under the radar as much as the other teams on this list, especially after a New Year’s Day thumping of South Carolina in the Outback Bowl, but the Hawkeyes are on the brink of a run similar to the early part of the decade, when they won 31 games in a 3-year span. We’ve all heard about the 4 losses by a combined 12 points last year, but if the Hawkeyes had executed better late in those games, they could have legitimately been 3-4 wins better. A lot of that falls on QB Ricky Stanzi, who progressed well in his first season as the starter and showed a lot of poise late in the season. Workhorse back Shonn Greene is gone, but Jewel Hampton will lead a talented group of running backs that could see 3 or 4 guys get significant touches. The WR corp should be improved, with the addition of converted QB Marvin McNutt, a healthy Trey Stross, and talented freshman Keenan Davis. The line loses two key players but also returns one of the best tackle tandems in the nation and a wealth of experience. Two sparkplugs on defense, Mitch King and Matt Kroul, are gone up front, but 8 starters return and they have the ability to be as good as or better than last season’s top 5 scoring D. All 5 road games will be brutal, but double-digit wins is not out of the question for the Hawkeyes this fall.

3. Nevada
The Wolfpack’s unique Pistol offense was wildly successful last year, when Nevada finished 3rd in the nation in rushing offense and fifth in total offense. QB Colin Kaepernick became just the 5th QB in history to run for over 2,000 yards and rush for over 1,000. RB Vai Taua had over 1,500 yards after being buried on the depth chart at the start of the season. Both return along with 15 other starters. The flaw for the Wolfpack is defense, especially the pass D. But this year they return a pair of ends that each had double digit sacks and a lot of overall experience on defense, so look for them to make some improvements. The OOC schedule is tough, including games against Notre Dame and Missouri, but they have the talent on offense to hang with anybody and could wind up with 9+ wins.

2. Arkansas
The Razorbacks will boast probably the best offense no one will pay attention to. Ryan Mallet has as strong an arm as anyone in the country, and he will have a plethora of weapons at his disposal: RB Michael Smith, TE D.J. Williams, and a loaded WR corp. The problem for this team will again be the defense, which ranked last in the SEC last year. However, nearly all of that defense will be back and will (hopefully) be improved. The real decisive factor this year will be the rough road schedule. The Hogs have to travel to probably the 4 best teams in the conference in Florida, ‘Bama, LSU and Ole Miss. If Arkansas can take care of business at home and beat Texas A&M on the road, 7-8 wins is likely and 9 is not completely out of the question.

1. Illinois

It seems like Illinois under-achieves every year that Zook has been at the helm. Every off-season we here about what a great recruiter Zook is, and he has been able to put some insanely talented players on the field at Illinois. But with the exception of the 2007 Rose Bowl season, the results have not panned out on the field. This year the Illini return two All-American caliber players in QB Juice Williams and WR Arrelious Benn. Illinois should have no trouble scoring points, but the defense will need to improve on last season, when they allowed over 26 points per game. The Illini miss both Iowa and Wisconsin this year, and their two toughest conference tests will be right off the bat at Ohio State and against Penn State. If they can steal one of those games, the Illini will likely be favored in all of their remaining games and could end up in the hunt for the Big 10 crown.

When deciding who to use for our Top 5 Sleeper Teams, our main concern was picking teams we though would over-achieve; teams that will win more games than most predict. As such, these teams aren’t necessarily the teams that will be the most shocking, but rather the teams that have the potential for improvement. I’m sure there are some picks that many will disagree with, so sound off in our comments section!

GameRosters.com gives their top 5 non-BCS teams of the 2009 college football season.

Another entry in GameRosters.com’s series of college football “top 5’s”. These teams may not be on the radar of most college football fans, but they should be. All of them hail from non-BCS conferences (3 from the Mountain West) and receive little television exposure. That doesn’t mean these teams aren’t worth checking out. You want offense? Check out Houston and Boise State. Defense? TCU will smother offenses all year. Rivalries? Attend the Holy War between Utah and BYU and then we’ll talk. This Top 5 list has a little bit of everything for the college football fan, so let’s look at each team a little more in-depth.

5. Houston, C-USA, Coach: Kevin Sumlin
It’s all about offense at Houston, where the Cougars posted over 560 yards per game and over 400 yards through the air last year. QB Case Keenum is the returning conference player of the year, and why not with over 5,000 yards and 44 TD’s. He returns a 1,000 yard rusher in Bryce Beall and 6 of his top 7 receivers; opposing defenses will struggle to hold this team under 40 points. The defense will likely struggle again, which will lead to a lot of high-scoring affairs. We will get a feel for how good Houston can be early on as the Cougars travel to Oklahoma State and then get Texas Tech at home in back to back games. Don’t be surprised if both games go over 100 points between the two teams. After the Texas Tech game Houston gets three straight road games, so the schedule is not friendly, but the talent is there for a conference championship and some national recognition. At the very least this team will be exciting to watch every week.

4. BYU, MWC, Coach: Bronco Mendenhall
Max Hall is the best QB in the conference, and one of the best in the nation. The defense returns 6 of the front 7 and will improve on last season’s mediocre season (numbers-wise). We think BYU has a chance to finish in the top 25 for the 4th straight year, but the thing that might prevent that is the schedule. Non-conference games against Oklahoma and Florida State will be brutal, but luckily the Cougars get both TCU and Utah at home. If they can split those 4 tough games, BYU will again reach double-digit wins and contend for the conference crown and a top 25 ranking. Another 10-win season and Bronco Mendenhall will become an even hotter commodity in the coaching world.

3. Utah, MWC, Coach: Kyle Wittingham
The Utes are coming off an undefeated season that culminated with a national spotlight stunner over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, so you’d think we would have them higher on this list. Utah does return a dominant defense largely intact, but the offense will miss a lot on offense, including outstanding quarterback Brian Johnson. Replacement Corbin Louks is one of the fastest players on the field, so keep an eye on him. Much like TCU, the Utes face an early season road test: at Oregon. Expect another bowl season for sure and another run at a conference title, but we don’t think the Utes will be making another splash in the BCS picture this year.

2. TCU, MWC, Coach: Gary Patterson
When we think of TCU we think of one thing: defense. The Horned Frogs had the #1 defense in the nation last year, allowing just 11.3 points per game, 47 rushing yards per game, and just 218 total yards per game. They have to replace several guys on defense this year, but expect another dominant defense led by DE Jerry Hughes. Hughes is one of the top defensive linemen in the entire country; he had 15 sacks and 6 forced fumbles last year. The offense will be no slouch either, led by talented QB Andy Dalton. Although we think TCU is the 2nd best non-BCS team, don’t be surprised if their record doesn’t indicate it. Early season road tests against Virginia and Clemson will show us what to expect from the Frogs this season. Expect them to battle with both Utah and BYU for what might be the most exciting conference race all year; it will certainly be the best one that nobody pays attention to.

1. Boise State, WAC, Coach: Chris Petersen

Kellen Moore will be just a sophomore but is the focal point of the offense and is capable of carrying the load on an explosive offense. The defense could be equally good after allowing just 12.6 points per game last year. The Broncos are far and away the class of the WAC, and should cruise to another undefeated season in the conference. The real test this year will be the season-opener against Oregon. With such a generous pre-season ranking this year (top 15 in most early polls), if Boise can get a win over the hyped up Ducks, they will be set-up for a BCS-bowl season. And don’t think they can’t do it; the Broncos beat Oregon 37-32 at Oregon last year on their way to an undefeated season.

There is our top 5 non-BCS conference teams. We feel confident in the top 4, but that 5th spot was a tough one to fill out. We went with Houston based on the strength of their thrill-a-minute offense and outstanding QB. You can do a lot worse than watching Houston hang 50 points week in and week out.

Let us know what you think in our comments section.

GameRosters.com brings you another entry in a series of "Top 5's": The top 5 conference games of the 2009 college football season.

It’s been awhile since we last posted a blog update; we have been busy working on producing and distributing our rosters for NCAA 10. Now that we’ve got some time to blog again, we’ll continue our series of “Top 5’s” with the Top 5 Conference Games of 2009. Let’s jump right in.

5. Oklahoma State @ Oklahoma, Nov. 28th

The battle for the Bedlam Bell is the final game of the regular season for both teams. For Oklahoma, a trip to the National Championship game could be on the line. For Oklahoma State, an upset could mean a possible birth in the Big 12 Championship and BCS Bowl hopes. Each team will face a difficult road to reach this game, but it has the potential to have a major impact on the national scene. If there is any team capable of knocking of the Sooners, it may be OSU. The Cowboys’ offense will be as good as any in the nation, but they will need their defense to come up with a few more stops than last year (defense gave up 47 points per game in their 4 losses). At the very least, this game should be a wildly entertaining close to the season.

4. USC @ Oregon, Oct. 31st
This Halloween night game at Autzen could decide the winner of the Pac 10. The last time USC didn’t have at least a share of the conference championship was 2001, when Oregon took home the crown. This year, Oregon has high expectations and gets Cal, Oregon State and USC all at home, which could set them up for a special season. USC has other plans, however. Despite the loss of their starting QB and a ton on defense, the Trojans will be as talented as ever and will be looking for their 8th straight conference title. Regardless of the outcome, the winner of this game will likely be hoisting the Pac 10 trophy and smelling roses in January.

3. Ohio State @ Penn State, Nov. 7th
While this game lacks the luster of the big-time matchups in the SEC and Big 12, it could very well decide the Big Ten championship. Penn State won a defensive struggle last year at the ‘Shoe and represented the conference in the Rose Bowl, while OSU went to the Fiesta. Both teams lost to top teams from other conferences, further adding to the notion that the Big Ten is not at the level of some other BCS conferences. The Buckeyes should roll into this game no worse than the top 10, with only a Sept. 12th game against USC to slow them down. Penn State also has a great chance to enter this game in the top 10, which would setup another huge meeting that could very well decide the Big Ten Championship. If one or both of these teams can enter the game undefeated, the winner will have a good shot at making noise in the National Title race.

2. Florida @ LSU, Oct. 10th

This showdown will have the winners of the last 3 BCS National Championship games, as well as the only two teams to win the BCS National Title more than once. Last year Florida won this game big on their way to a second national title in three years. This year expect the game to be closer; LSU has a boatload of talent and the game is at Death Valley (at night no less). With the way these two teams stack up this year, this game could very well be a preview of the SEC Championship game, and with the winner of the last 3 SEC Championship’s having been the eventual National Champions, this game could give us an early look at our 2010 BCS National Champions.

1. Oklahoma vs. Texas, Oct. 17th (Dallas)
We all know the storylines surrounding this game: The Red River Rivalry, the match-up of two top Heisman contenders, a birth in the Big 12 Championship game on the line, and a very good possibility that a birth in the National Championship is on the line. Well, try telling that to Texas; the Longhorns beat the Sooners last year only to sit back and watch Oklahoma lose the title game to Florida. This year, both teams will enter the season in the top 5, and maybe even the top 3. If Texas can get by Texas Tech early they will roll into this game undefeated. Oklahoma, meanwhile, gets a couple tough games against BYU and at Miami, but should also enter the game undefeated. That would set up a meeting between two 5-0 teams likely ranked in the top 3, with the winner no doubt having the inside track to the National Championship game.

Well, there’s our top 5 conference games for the upcoming season. Criteria was based on the caliber of the teams, the national impact of the game, and of course the entertainment factor. Let us know what you think of our list and how you would improve it in our comments section below.

GameRosters.com highlights the best 5 non-conference games of the 2009 season.

Last week we gave you our Top 5 Overrated and Underrated teams based on the pre-season top 25 rankings on NCAA 10. This week we have another top 5: the 5 best non-conference games of the 2009 college football season. We chose 5 games that will have the biggest implications on the football season and will be the most entertaining for the fans. There were several that we strongly considered that didn’t make the list, including Oklahoma-Miami and Florida-Florida St., but in the end we decided on the 5 big-time games listed below.

5. Utah @ Oregon, Sept. 19th
Many of you may think Oklahoma-Miami or USC-ND should go here, but we are very excited for this match-up. Utah is riding the momentum of an undefeated season and a huge Sugar Bowl win over Alabama. Oregon is the trendy pick as a NC darkhorse. Utah will have a terrific defense but some questions on offense. Oregon will have a terrific offense but some questions on defense. This game is Utah’s one chance this season to show what it’s made of outside the conference, while Oregon will have already played at Boise State. If the Ducks can beat Boise, this game will be the final stepping stone to launch a potential top-10 team into conference play. If the Ducks fall to Boise, this game will be even bigger; it would be a must-win if the Ducks want to keep their BCS hopes alive.

4. Oregon @ Boise State, Sept. 5th
Last season Boise St. came into Autzen Stadium and won a 37-32 thriller against the Ducks. This season, Oregon is widely considered a top 10-15 team and the Pac-10’s best chance to knock USC from its perch atop the conference, so a win here would be big for the Ducks. Jeremiah Masoli and LeGarrette Blount will lead a deadly Oregon team, but Boise State is loaded and a legit BCS threat. If the Broncos can get another big win over Oregon to open the season, they will be primed for another undefeated run and a shot at a BCS bowl. The Ducks could use a big road win to springboard them into games against Purdue and Utah before they reach the Pac-10 slate.

3. Georgia @ Oklahoma State, Sept. 5th
This opening week matchup will be a huge test for both teams and the conferences they represent. Oklahoma State can simultaneously prove they are worthy of a top 10 ranking and quiet down the SEC’s big bad reputation. Georgia has a great chance to knock off one of the Big 12’s best and show what kind of team they can be without 1st round picks Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno. Okie State boasts one of the nation’s best offenses, with stars at every skill position, and Georgia always has a great defense. This game will be an interesting one for the fans, with major implications for both teams.

2. Alabama vs. Virginia Tech, Sept. 5th (in Atlanta, GA)

Georgia Dome in Atlanta

Last eason Alabama used an opening-week thumping of Clemson in the Georgia Dome to vault to a special season. They will have the opportunity to knock off another big-time ACC team this season with the Hokies. Both teams have high hopes not only within their respective conferences, but on the national stage as well, so this game will provide an early measuring stick for both teams. The game might mean more for Virginia Tech, who could use a big win to carry momentum into upcoming games against Nebraska and Miami. Even with a loss, Alabama will likely stay in the top 10-15 and, with the strength of the SEC schedule, could still have a shot at the National Championship game if they win out.

1. USC @ Ohio State, Sept. 12th
The Buckeyes got rolled last season at The Coliseum, 35-3, giving more fuel to the Big 10 haters. Despite OSU’s tendency to get rocked on the national stage, we think this year’s game will be much closer. The Buckeyes have two major factors working in their favor: this year’s game is at The ‘Shoe, and Terrelle Pryor won’t have to watch Todd Boeckman struggle all game long. Add in the fact that USC is breaking in a new QB and a new defense and this is the best chance the Buckeyes have had to start changing their image (and the conference’s) as a team that can’t compete with the top programs from other conferences. Despite everything working in OSU’s favor, they will still be hard-pressed to pull out a win. The Buckeyes have to replace several key pieces on both sides of the ball, and Pete Carroll’s Trojans are as loaded as any team in the nation. The Horseshoe will need to be rockin’ and OSU will have to set the tone early if they hope to hang with the Trojans and avoid another embarrassing performance on national TV. The winner of this game will be sitting pretty with a top 5 ranking and an inside track to the National Championship, while the loser will need to run the table in their own conference and hope for some luck.
